Pete Dye is coming back to the Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra, Fla. but this time it won't be to soften up the home of the Players Championship. The Stadium course, home to the annual tournament sometimes referred to as the "fifth major," will close April 2 for about six months as officials work to improve drainage on the course. The facility's other course, the Valley, will stay open.

The sleepy town of Freeport, Fla., is awakening in a hurry with a major new development on the way that will include a world-class golf course by Arnold Palmer's design company. What also has them excited in Freeport is the area's new designation: the "coastal inland heights." With the new moniker and an inland location that helps allay hurricane fears, Freeport is making a strong move into Florida's epic golfing community.

Golfers and ospreys may soon find life a little more enjoyable in Lakeland, Fla. The Bridgewater Golf Club, now under construction, is expected to be completed in January and it will turn some nasty land into a golf course and wildlife habitat.

Florida knows how to do hurricanes, as do the Gulf Coast states. During the past few years, if a hurricane isn't hitting directly, there always seems to be one threatening. Hurricane Dennis is just the latest salvo and, although his bark was worse than his bite, the storm still caused about $1 billion in damages. Golf courses on the Gulf Coast seemed to fare the worst, though some south Florida courses were affected as well.

What's a master-planned, Florida community without a golf course? Not much. Golf is one of the prime drawing cards for the state. The master-planned community of Viera, near Melbourne, will have a new 27-hole golf facility this summer, Tim McDonald reports. The Duran Golf Club is scheduled to open for play July 1 and will be a daily-fee course open to the public. The opening was delayed by the storms of the past summer.

The Heritage Golf Group has announced its acquisition of The Legacy Golf Club at Aqua Lakes in Longwood, 15 minutes north of Orlando on Interstate 4. Heritage Golf Group, in existence since 1999, has purchased properties across America, including Atlanta National Golf Club, Washington National Golf Club and Valencia Country Club in California.

There will be another public access, daily-fee golf course in Jacksonville when Panther Creek opens the first of next year. The course, designed by Andy Dye, the nephew of famed golf architect Pete Dye, is undergoing construction on the west side of the city, about a 40-minute drive from the beaches of the First Coast.

A family-owned Florida golf resort, which is becoming a rarity with increasing corporate ownership, is selling out. Lekarica Restaurant and County Inn, together with the Lekarica Hills Golf Course in Highland Park south of Lake Wales, will be sold to the highest bidder on Sept. 2.

Jack Nicklaus has agreed to build a new course in Ft. Lauderdale, at the new St. Regis Golf Club & Lodge. Nicklaus will re-do the old Oak Tree Country Club course, designed by Dick Wilson in 1959. With little more than 120 acres to work with, Nicklaus told PGA.com he expects to build a 6,600-yard course, which will be the centerpiece of the St. Regis Resort, Spa and Residence.
